Impromptu 65-Miler

As many of you know, my mom and I are training for the STP this July. My mom has a couple friends who asked her to do an impromptu 65 70-mile bike race on Saturday May 5th. She called a couple days prior and asked me if I wanted to do it also. I was a little hesitant because the most miles I had gone was 40 and it was the weekend prior. With slight hesitation and making sure I could borrow a street bike from someone, I signed up. We (Jon, I + kids) headed down to Oregon (Timberland Lodge) on Friday to attend my cousin's wedding (which was beautiful). After the wedding my dad, Jon and the kids headed home, while my mom and I stayed at a friends home to get some sleep and be ready for the race the next morning.
After a rough night sleep, we woke up and were at the race grounds (Clark College) by 8:00am. We started our race around 8:30am. Unfortunately I forgot my camera, but what I can say is that the "race" was hard! I have never done so many hills! Maybe it was a sign that I should. The country was beautiful and I did end up completely the race in just over 5hrs. I am really grateful for the opportunity that I had to do it. It was a long 70 (it was only supposed to be 65) miles, but it was also fun. Next time though, I'll be sure to buy bike shorts, and the right sized jacket (accidently bought a size too small). I know I still have a lot of training to do, but at least now I know I can do 70 miles!
